{"id":6462,"date":"2023-04-03T15:58:17","date_gmt":"2023-04-03T15:58:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/acmanet.org\/2023\/04\/in-washington-insider-april-6-2023\/"},"modified":"2023-04-03T15:58:17","modified_gmt":"2023-04-03T15:58:17","slug":"in-washington-insider-april-6-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acmanet.org\/in-washington-insider-april-6-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"In Washington &#8211; Insider &#8211; April 6, 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48412223 BCX0\">ACMA <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW48412223 BCX0\">Urges New Labor Contract for West Coast Ports<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165143833 BCX0\">ACMA has joined over 200 national, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165143833 BCX0\">state<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165143833 BCX0\"> and local trade associations <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165143833 BCX0\">on a<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165143833 BCX0\">letter to President Biden <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165143833 BCX0\">regarding<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165143833 BCX0\"> the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165143833 BCX0\">uncertainty caused by <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165143833 BCX0\">ongoing <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165143833 BCX0\">negotiations for a new <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165143833 BCX0\">labor contract for essential <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165143833 BCX0\">West Coast<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165143833 BCX0\">Ports. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165143833 BCX0\">Other signatories include the National Association of Manufacturers and the American Chemistry Council.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>ACMA and other associations worked to create the letter following reports that negotiators remained at odds on a number of key issues, and shipping data showed significant shifting of freight from West Coast to East Coast ports, further straining supply chains. The letter states that \u201c[t]he lack of a labor contract adds to this uncertainty. While we appreciate that the parties agreed not to engage in a strike or a lockout, we are aware of several instances of activities that have impacted terminal operations. We need the administration to ensure these activities do not continue or escalate.<\/p>\n<p>We know that significant issues remain for both parties to resolve. However, the only way to resolve these issues is for the parties to remain at the bargaining table and actually negotiate.
