ACMA Announces Invitation To Revise Its Utility Pole Standard

Arlington, VA — (February 18, 2025)  The American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA) is seeking interested individuals to participate on the Utility Pole Relevant Committee to update and revise the language in ANSI/ACMA/UCSC-FRP Composite Utility Poles-1-2018 Standard Specification for FRP Composite Utility Poles. ACMA will establish a Consensus Body responsible for approving the final draft so that it can be adopted as an  American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/ACMA standard. The Project Initiation Notification System (PINS) announcement for this standard was published in ANSI Standards ActionVolume 56, No. 6, on February 7, 2025.

The Standard Specification for FRP Composite Utility Poles encompasses the design, materials, properties, manufacturing, quality control, assembly and installation, and inspection of direct embedded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite utility poles. The applications include cantilevered, framed, and combined structures. It does not cover crossarms, lattice structures, conductors, insulators, stand-offs, or other FRP components used in the electrical grid. For transmission applications, a civil engineer and a geotechnical expert shall confirm the foundation requirements for a given loading criteria. The Relevant Committee will address new information such as environmental sustainability and testing to keep the standard current.

Membership in ACMA is not a requirement to participate as a member of the Relevant Committee or Consensus Body. Relevant Committee members are tasked with recommending and revising language, as well as addressing comments from public stakeholders. Meanwhile, Consensus Body members are responsible for conducting the final review and voting on the standard to determine its approval for publication.

Consensus Body members may represent one of the following interest categories:
