ACMA announces winners for 2019 ACE Awards
September 24, 2019 (Anaheim, CA.) – The American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA) is proud to announce the winners for the Awards for Composites Excellence (ACE), sponsored by Composites One. ACE is a prestigious composites industry competition that recognizes outstanding achievement and innovation in design, manufacturing and market growth. The winning entries were announced at the sixth annual CAMX-The Composites and Advanced Materials Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA, on September 24, and finalists will all be on display in the ACE Award Pavilion from Sep. 24-26, 2019.
In the Design category, the Most Creative Application Award is presented to the composites product that showcases composites use in a unique, new application or use composites’ attributes in imaginative, innovative, or artistic ways. This year, the award went to the University of Tennessee for developing its Carbon Fiber Braided Arched Beams in Park & Recreation.
The Innovation in Green Composites Design Award was awarded to Lyondellbasell for their work to create a new SMC Material which can assist in qualifying for LEEDS and meets the California Proposal 65. This material is styrene free and also is available with flame retardant properties or without the flame retardant chemistry.
In the Manufacturing category, the Equipment and Tooling Innovation Award is given to the equipment, tooling, production aid, or software that is designed to improve manufacturing production, environmental sustainability or product quality and performance in composites manufacturing. This year, the award went to Fortify for its 3D Printing Magnetically Aligned Composites.
The Manufacturing category also features the Materials and Process Innovation Award, which recognizes a material or process that best contributes to efficient manufacturing and product sustainability. This year, the award went to Spirit AeroSystems Inc. for its Advanced Structures Technology & Revolutionary Architecture (ASTRA) Demonstrator.
Finally, in the Market Growth category, the Infinite Possibility for Market Growth Award is given to the composites product that demonstrates the potential to significantly increase the use of composites in existing markets or generate the greatest impact to open new and emerging markets for composites. This year the award went to the University of Delaware for its Tailorable Universal Feedstock for Forming (TUFF).
