Biden Administration Selects Regional Hydrogen Hubs, No Action on Hydrogen Tax Credits

The Biden Administration has announced seven locations for the development of hydrogen ecosystems designed to “accelerate the commercial-scale deployment of low-cost, clean hydrogen” from production of the fuel to transmission and industrial use. A key part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, this announcement comes as hydrogen proponents continue to wait for the Treasury Department to implement important tax credits.

In the October 13 Department of Energy announcement, DOE touted the seven Hydrogen Hubs (“H2Hubs”) as “national network of clean hydrogen producers, consumers, and connective infrastructure” aimed to spur the the production, storage, delivery, and end-use of clean hydrogen.” DOE hopes to these investments will produce three million metric tons of hydrogen annually

 The announced H2Hubs are:

  • Appalachian Hydrogen Hub (West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania)
  • California Hydrogen Hub
  • Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub (Texas)
  • Heartland Hydrogen Hub (Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota)
  • Mid-Atlantic Hydrogen Hub (Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey)
  • Midwest Hydrogen Hub (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan)
  • Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub (Washington, Oregon, Montana)
